Heroes square: Completion Date Pushed Back
Limassol’s Heroes Square will be handed over in its redesigned form by June 15, several weeks later than the original early-May deadline, as renovation works enter their final stage. The delay was partly caused by restoration work on the square’s listed kiosks, which had deteriorated with age and required coordination with the relevant government department.
Ongoing Works and Improvements
In addition to the square, works are currently taking place on the road in front of the Rialto Theatre. These improvements include a significant enhancement of the connection between the theatre’s steps and the square itself.
A Step-Free Design for Accessibility
The redesign of Heroes Square aims to create a fully accessible environment. The previous steps that defined the square’s layout have been eliminated, allowing for a step-free space. This change is intended to facilitate access for all visitors, promoting inclusivity within the urban area.
Pedestrianisation and Community Features
As part of the renovation, surrounding streets will be pedestrianised during specific hours of the day. This initiative is expected to enhance the area’s vibrancy and safety, encouraging more foot traffic and community engagement.
The design proposal, titled “Square of Everyday Heroes,” was developed by the architectural teams AA&U-Socrates Stratis and INB2in studio-Maria Hatzisotiriou following a competitive selection process. The new features include a “Small Rialto,” an “Ideas Greenhouse for All,” a “Toy Library,” and “Hanging Gardens,” all designed to enrich the public space.
Innovative Sustainability Features
One of the innovative aspects of the redesign is the square’s flooring, which is specifically engineered to collect rainwater through perforated surfaces. This rainwater will be channelled into underground tanks via linear drains, contributing to sustainable water management in the area.
Funding and Project Management
The renovation project is significantly funded by the European Union under the THALIA 2021–2027 Cohesion Policy Programme, with a total budget of €3.9 million excluding VAT. The construction contract was officially signed on August 5, 2024, between Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and Christos Christou, the director of An. Christou Constructions, marking a significant step towards the completion of this urban revitalisation project.
As the completion date approaches, the anticipation for the new Heroes Square continues to grow among local residents and visitors alike. With its modern design and enhanced accessibility, the square is set to become a central hub for community activities and gatherings.
