Authorities are now grappling with a situation that goes beyond seasonal congestion, recognising that it has become a permanent issue. As a result, traffic management has surged to the forefront of their agenda for 2026.
Recent observations highlight a concerning trend, with police, the municipal authority, and the Traffic Studies Authority intensifying their focus on the growing gridlock. Daily scenes of congestion on major roads have become commonplace, accompanied by a frequency of both serious and minor accidents.
While Paphos has not yet reached the congestion levels seen in Nicosia and Limassol, the escalating situation has raised alarms among both residents and officials, a stark contrast to the previously minimal concern for traffic issues.
The increase in population and commercial activity in Paphos, alongside the disruptions caused by extensive renovation projects in recent years, have contributed significantly to this traffic crisis. Authorities have noted that, at certain points on the urban road network, the existing infrastructure is inadequate to handle the current traffic demands.
Particularly problematic areas include the roundabouts at Konia and Paphos Hospital, where conditions have been deemed hazardous. The traffic flow at these locations has resulted in a high incidence of collisions, and congestion at the Konia roundabout has reached levels never before seen in the district.
To alleviate the situation, police crews have been stationed at these critical junctions every morning, attempting to manage the flow of vehicles. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, delays, long queues, and minor accidents have become an everyday occurrence for commuters.
Other locations across the city and its suburbs also experience significant dysfunction. Notably, the Silos road leading to Paphos Hospital and Tassos Papadopoulos Avenue from Viofos towards EAC are frequently congested. Main roads leading to the commercial centre, including Ellados Avenue, Evagoras Pallikaridis Avenue, and Grivas Digenis Avenue, face similar traffic troubles.
In light of these challenges, authorities are committed to addressing the growing traffic concerns in Paphos, as they prepare for a systematic approach to improve the situation by 2026.
