global sumud — The focus keyword in this unfolding situation is the Global Sumud Flotilla, which has been the centre of attention following a recent interception by Israeli naval forces. Cyprus’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) has clarified that the flotilla never entered Cypriot territorial waters, with all activities occurring in international waters approximately 90 nautical miles from Cyprus.

According to the JRCC, no distress signal was received from the flotilla that would necessitate search and rescue operations. The centre reaffirmed its commitment to respond appropriately to any distress signals in accordance with international obligations.

The recent events have stirred political tensions within Cyprus. The opposition party, AKEL, has condemned the interception, labelling it a new Israeli attack on the flotilla. They urged the Christodoulides government to denounce the interception and to advocate for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza in line with the international community.

AKEL’s criticism extends to Israel’s actions, which they describe as violations of international law amid what they term an ongoing genocide in Gaza. The party has accused the Cypriot government of remaining silent on these serious allegations, calling for a more assertive stance against the Netanyahu regime.

As tensions rise, activists have planned a protest outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. Scheduled for 7.00pm, the demonstration aims to pressurise Cypriot authorities to take action in support of the convoy.

Earlier on Monday, reports emerged of Israeli navy commandos boarding a vessel associated with the flotilla. Video footage circulating online shows the operation taking place off the coast of Cyprus. Participants in the flotilla had received warnings from Israel to change course or return immediately. The Global Flotilla reported that two warships were surrounding their vessels, leading to a loss of contact with one ship, which they claimed was being harassed by Israeli military forces.

This recent interception is part of a series of Israeli naval operations targeting the convoy, which departed from Italy in April with over 50 boats intended to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. Prior to this, on April 30, Israeli forces conducted an illegal interception off Crete, employing drones, communication jamming technology, and armed units to halt the vessels in the Mediterranean. Two leaders of the flotilla, Palestinian activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, were detained and reportedly tortured following that operation.

Israel has dismissed the flotilla as a mere media stunt, stating that organisers rejected offers to transfer their aid to Israel or international organisations for legal access to Gaza. In contrast, Turkey has labelled the earlier interceptions as acts of piracy. Spain has described them as illegal, while Germany and Italy have expressed grave concern. Amnesty International has also weighed in, calling the interceptions brazen and unlawful.
