chief business — Michalis Athanasiou has been appointed as the Chief Business Officer at National Bank of Greece (Cyprus), marking a significant step in enhancing the bank’s management team during a phase of dynamic growth. This strategic move is part of the Group’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in Cyprus.
Athanasiou is no stranger to leadership, boasting extensive experience gained from senior management roles in Cyprus, Australia, and Luxembourg. His career is highlighted by his involvement in managing critical transformation projects and capital-enhancement initiatives, which are crucial in today’s evolving financial landscape.
His previous role as Group Chief Risk Officer at Bank of Cyprus saw him play a pivotal part in raising €1 billion in new capital in 2014. This initiative not only stabilised but also significantly strengthened the bank’s balance sheet, showcasing his capability in navigating complex financial environments.
Further, as Executive Director of Global Corporate Banking & Markets, Athanasiou managed a corporate portfolio catering to large and international enterprises. His strategic oversight contributed to the growth and stability of the bank’s operations within highly regulated markets.
At Eurobank Private Bank Luxembourg, he first served as Senior General Manager and later as CEO. His leadership there resulted in a remarkable increase in profitability, solidifying the bank’s competitive position in the wealth management sector.
In a statement regarding this new appointment, CEO George Agioutantis of National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) expressed confidence in Athanasiou’s extensive experience and deep knowledge.
