flu death — Cyprus has recorded its first flu death as cases surge and hospital admissions increase across the island. The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) confirmed that the fatality, which occurred several days ago, involved an individual from a vulnerable population group.
SHSO spokesman Charalambos Charilaou highlighted the concerning trend, stating, “We’re seeing increased winter virus activity in the community in recent days, and as a result, we’re seeing more hospital admissions.” This alarming rise in flu cases coincides with a typical seasonal pattern observed in Cyprus, where virus activity often peaks following the holiday season.
Current ward occupancy in hospitals stands at approximately 85-90%, although Charilaou reassured the public that there are no operational issues within the healthcare system. “There’s no problem with hospital operations,” he explained, providing a sense of stability amidst the rising admissions.
Interestingly, this year’s flu season has presented a different landscape compared to previous years, particularly with fewer admissions related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which had significantly impacted paediatric hospitalisation last winter. Charilaou noted, “We’re not seeing that this year,” indicating a shift in the types of viral infections affecting the population.
While COVID-19 continues to prompt some hospital admissions, the numbers remain relatively low. Charilaou stated, “We’re seeing COVID admissions year-round now, and we have the experience in treating our patients,” suggesting that healthcare providers are well-prepared to manage these cases.
With the SHSO anticipating further increases in flu cases and hospital admissions in the near future, the organisation is urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The ongoing situation highlights the importance of maintaining health awareness during the winter months as flu viruses circulate more freely.
