Residents in parts of Lakatamia are facing significant water supply disruptions caused by a fault in a key water pipeline. This issue affects the Lakatamia, Tseri, and Anthoupoli districts, as well as the community of Ergates.
The pipeline, managed by the water development department (ΤΑΥ), is critical as it feeds water to the reservoirs of the Nicosia water board (ΕΟΑ) and supplies other communities in the Nicosia district. Unfortunately, the ongoing repair work has led to an exhaustion of the available water reserves in the ΕΟΑ reservoirs that serve the affected areas.
While ΤΑΥ is actively working to restore the pipeline, no specific timeline for completion has been provided. The lack of clarity has left residents anxious about the duration of the disruptions. Since the Nicosia water board’s establishment in July 2024, efforts have been made to assess the capacity of existing local reservoirs and enhance water supply reliability.
In a proactive measure, the board has constructed a new, larger GLS-type reservoir designed to bolster water supply to Lakatamia. This facility is anticipated to become operational before the year’s end and is expected to significantly improve water autonomy in the event of future supply interruptions from ΤΑΥ. The new reservoir will increase reserve capacity from 13 to 37 hours, offering a more robust buffer against similar disruptions.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to conserve water while repairs are underway. The community’s resilience is being tested as they navigate these unexpected challenges, with authorities working diligently to restore normalcy.
