- Two men were arrested in the Famagusta district on Wednesday night on suspicion of rape in two separate incidents.
Rape: First Case Involves Longstanding Complaint
The first case dates back to May 18, when a woman filed a complaint with the police regarding an alleged assault. Following a thorough investigation, authorities secured an arrest warrant and apprehended the suspect on the evening of May 24.
Tourist Reports Assault Shortly After
In a separate incident, a 20-year-old tourist reported being raped by an unknown assailant on May 16. The young woman lodged her complaint just three days later, on May 19. Investigators swiftly identified a 23-year-old man as the suspect in this case, leading to his arrest on the same night as the first suspect.
Wider Policing Operation Uncovers Additional Offences
The arrests were part of a broader overnight policing operation throughout Cyprus. Officers conducted organised patrols in urban areas, which resulted in the detention of seven individuals for various offences, including rape, unlawful possession of property, and public disturbances.
Traffic and Premises Inspections Yield Results
During the operation, police stopped 517 vehicles and checked 726 occupants. They also carried out 35 premises inspections that led to two additional complaints. Traffic checks alone resulted in 352 citations for various violations, with 85 specifically for speeding. In total, 12 vehicles were impounded, and 100 drink-drive checks were conducted, leading to two citations.
Police confirmed that their efforts to prevent and suppress crime are ongoing, with a strong emphasis on maintaining an enhanced presence in the community and executing targeted checks to ensure public safety.
