Thirty-four people were arrested on Wednesday during an operation targeting illegal employment at a construction site in Larnaca. This crackdown was part of a broader initiative aimed at addressing undeclared work and ensuring compliance with labour regulations.
The operation in Larnaca was executed by members of the immigration and migration service in collaboration with labour inspectors from the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. Police reported that the inspection is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal employment practices across the island.
During the operation, the authorities discovered that the arrested individuals, who hailed from various nationalities, were working at the site without proper documentation. Two of those apprehended are suspected of residing illegally in Cyprus, further complicating the situation.
Authorities have indicated that these individuals were employed by eight contractors, who now face out-of-court fines for failing to declare their workers legally. This highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating the labour market and ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and legally.
