The case file concerning suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos has been sent back to the police for further investigation into serious abuse claims. This development was confirmed on Friday, following actions taken by the attorney-general’s office.
The file had initially been submitted to the Law Office of the Republic on February 26, but has now been returned to the police with directives for a more exhaustive inquiry, as reported by sources from the Law Office to the Cyprus News Agency. However, these same sources indicated that it remains unclear when the investigation will conclude.
Phedonos has consistently denied all allegations against him and has participated in the police investigations by providing testimony. The allegations first gained prominence in February, when Theodoros Aristodemou, a Paphos-based land developer from Aristo Developers, accused the mayor of committing rape approximately ten years ago. Aristodemou’s accusations prompted him to come forward and make a statement to the police.
In addition to the rape allegations, claims of domestic abuse have also emerged. Social media personality Ioanna Photiou, known as Annie Alexui, recently alleged that she possesses documents related to Phedonos’ wife, Louiza Andreou, which reportedly indicate that she was admitted to the Nicosia general hospital in 2017 with injuries described as the result of being “beaten” by her husband. Despite these claims, Andreou has firmly rejected all accusations made against her spouse, defending his character in public statements.
