denia confrontation — denia confrontation — In an effort to prevent a repeat of the recent confrontation involving Turkish military forces and Greek Cypriot farmers, President Nikos Christodoulides has stated that the government is undertaking the necessary processes. This statement came following a brief incident that occurred on Saturday in the buffer zone near the village of Denia, located in the Nicosia district.
During an event in Kokkinotrimithia on Sunday, Christodoulides addressed the situation, mentioning he had already communicated with the village’s mukhtar, Christakis Panayiotou. The President emphasised that “from the very first moment, all the necessary processes are being carried out in a specific direction, so that such phenomena do not repeat themselves.”
Describing the incident as “certainly not a positive development,” Christodoulides highlighted the importance of creating an appropriate climate for resuming talks aimed at resolving the ongoing Cyprus problem. His remarks reflect the tense atmosphere surrounding the buffer zone, which has historically been a contentious area.
On the same day, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas expressed his disappointment regarding the United Nations’ approach, which he characterised as maintaining “equal distances” between the two sides of the island. “We cannot play with fire. The Republic of Cyprus cannot tolerate such approaches and views,” he stated, adding that the foreign ministry has already initiated steps to address the situation.
Palmas urged the UN to take a firmer stance rather than maintaining equal distance, especially in light of dangerous situations arising from the actions of occupying forces. He insisted that the only way to prevent future provocations is for the United Nations to enforce the principles and values of the UN charter.
In response to the incident, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp), Aleem Siddique, confirmed that Turkish forces had indeed “approached” farmers near Denia that Saturday morning. He noted that UN peacekeepers were present to diffuse tensions and that all parties involved subsequently left the area, with the situation remaining calm. Siddique reassured that the UN continues to monitor the area closely, stressing that preventing tensions is their top priority.
The buffer zone near Denia has been a focal point for conflicts over the years, with Panayiotou reporting various threats and disagreements with Turkish soldiers. He recalled past incidents, including a situation where he believed Turkish forces were constructing an anti-tank trench, which was estimated to be four to five metres wide and three to four metres deep.
Siddique previously indicated that Unficyp was in contact with the mukhtar to reassure him about the unchanged status of the buffer zone. He reiterated that peacekeepers are present in the area to manage any challenges that may arise.
