In a statement released on Wednesday, Angelides sought to clarify his role amid a public debate that has intensified in recent days. “I have never submitted my resignation,” he asserted, emphasising that his commitment to the role remains strong despite external pressures.
Angelides explained that his decision to remain in office stems from his dedication to the institution he serves and the concerns voiced by his colleagues in the Legal Service. He stated, “Our collective responsibility towards the public interest and the country is paramount.” Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of respecting sensitive issues related to threats against him and his family, which are being handled by the appropriate authorities.
In response to allegations regarding corruption within the police force, Angelides categorically rejected claims that such issues could be a reason for his resignation. “I have never expressed the position that there is corruption in the police,” he declared.
Angelides also mentioned ongoing investigations into complaints against him pending with the Anti-Corruption Authority. While he refrained from discussing the specifics of these complaints, he acknowledged that delays in investigations should not be misconstrued as acceptance of a compromised rule of law. “This situation should concern everyone,” he remarked.
Amidst the swirling rumours, President Christodoulides confirmed that Angelides had not submitted his resignation, countering reports that he was persuaded to stay by two government ministers. Media sources have suggested that Angelides is under scrutiny due to four separate complaints currently being reviewed by the anti-corruption authority.
One notable case involves the ‘spy van’ incident from 2019, which Angelides oversaw during his tenure as head of criminal prosecutions. Although indictments were filed, the attorney-general’s office later dropped all charges against three individuals associated with the case. Angelides has since distanced himself from allegations of any improper relationships with these individuals, labelling them as part of a smear campaign.
Another case under investigation pertains to the ‘golden passports’ scheme, with accusations that Angelides failed to declare his ties to a law firm involved in promoting citizenship applications. As a former cabinet member, he is accused of potential conflict of interest in these matters.
Additionally, a third complaint claims that Angelides submitted fraudulent wealth declarations to parliament, omitting the acquisition of a company. This allegation, although anonymous, is reportedly supported by evidence.
As the situation unfolds, Angelides remains focused on his duties, calling for the Legal Service to operate without further hindrance. He expressed his resolve not to engage with what he termed “slanderous and malicious comments,” prioritising the integrity of his work and the institution he represents.
