Nikos Clerides is challenging police findings regarding a search warrant executed at his home, office, and vehicle as part of the ongoing ‘Sandy’ investigation. On Thursday, the Supreme Court reserved its decision on his application to annul the warrant, which he argues was unlawfully issued.

Clerides’ counsel, Alexandros Clerides, emphasised that the case focuses on the legality of the warrant itself rather than the actions taken post-execution. The warrant was obtained in connection with allegations of corruption, blackmail, and interference involving notable figures in Cyprus, brought to light by journalist Makarios Drousiotis.

Police Findings Under Scrutiny

Following a hearing, the police chief, Themistos Arnaoutis, shared findings from the investigation, concluding that allegations against individuals named in the case were baseless. Evidence, including witness testimony and forensic examinations, contradicted the claims. However, Clerides expressed significant doubts about the integrity of the investigation, arguing for the necessity of independent criminal investigators.

Dispute Over Evidence and Motive

Clerides questioned the relevance of the police’s assertion that investigators did not access private communications on seized devices, claiming it sidesteps the constitutional issue at hand. He pointed out that the messages he received from ‘Sandy’ were dated 2020 and 2021, while the phone examined by police related to a much later period in 2025 and 2026.

Moreover, he raised concerns about the lack of search warrants for devices allegedly used by ‘Sandy’ and a former Supreme Court judge during the earlier timeframe, further complicating the investigation.

Unanswered Questions

Clerides also highlighted the police’s failure to identify “user 6,” an individual referenced in communications that allegedly contained threats against his life. This absence of clarity adds to his argument that the investigation has not thoroughly addressed crucial elements of the case.

Despite the police concluding that they have not established a motive for why ‘Sandy’ would fabricate allegations, Clerides insisted that understanding this motive is essential for the integrity of the investigation.

The Broader Implications of the ‘Sandy’ Affair

The ‘Sandy’ affair emerged after allegations of a corrupt cabal involving political, judicial, and financial figures were made public. Central to these claims are purported messages, documents, and recordings that allegedly support accusations of misconduct. All individuals implicated have categorically denied any wrongdoing, adding to the complexity of the situation.
