The National Guard is set to display advanced helicopters and weapon systems at Wednesday’s Independence Day parade in Nicosia. Among the highlights will be the newly acquired H145M helicopters, delivered in May to the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos. These helicopters, representing cutting-edge technology, are expected to conduct impressive flypasts over the capital, showcasing their capabilities.
National guard: H145M Helicopters Ready for Display
The H145M helicopters are among the latest models in military aviation, designed for versatility and mission effectiveness. They have recently completed training flights over Nicosia, ensuring that pilots are well-prepared for their performance during the parade. With their advanced avionics and operational features, the H145M helicopters are considered top-tier assets in the National Guard’s inventory.
French AKERON Missiles on Sherpa Vehicles
In addition to the helicopters, military sources indicate that French-made AKERON guided missiles may be showcased mounted on Sherpa armoured vehicles during the parade. The AKERON missile system boasts Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) targeting capabilities, enabling operators to engage targets that are not visible. This advanced technology is a significant enhancement to the firepower available to the National Guard.
The Republic of Cyprus signed a contract with French manufacturer Arquus in May at the DEFEA international defence exhibition in Athens, securing 12 Sherpa armoured vehicles equipped to carry these sophisticated missiles. This addition reflects a broader strategy to modernise the National Guard’s capabilities.
Barak MX Air Defence System Not in Parade
While the National Guard has made strides in enhancing its military technology, the Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system will not be part of the parade display. Despite reports confirming its procurement and delivery, the advanced anti-aircraft platform is not expected to appear this year. This decision highlights the selective nature of the parade’s exhibit, focusing on specific assets that demonstrate the National Guard’s current operational readiness.
Previous Displays and Future Expectations
Last year’s Independence Day parade marked a milestone for the Cypriot armed forces with the debut of Israeli SPIKE LR2 missiles. This initial display symbolised a growing commitment to integrating advanced military technologies into the National Guard’s arsenal. As the forces continue to evolve, there is anticipation for future showcases that may include even more sophisticated systems.
Community Engagement and National Pride
The Independence Day parade serves not only as a platform for military displays but also as a celebration of national pride. Citizens are encouraged to attend and witness the advancements in their armed forces, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for the men and women who serve. The National Guard’s participation in the parade underscores its role in safeguarding the Republic of Cyprus and its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
As the National Guard prepares for the parade, there is excitement about the display of military might and technological advancements that reflect Cyprus’s strategic partnerships and defence capabilities. The event promises to be a significant occasion that highlights the evolution of the National Guard while reinforcing the importance of national sovereignty.
