The new town hall which will be built in Larnaca will be established at the site of the refurbished old hospital, as announced by deputy mayor Iasonas Iasonides. This development aims to align with Larnaca’s designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2030.
Funding the New Town Hall
To finance the construction, the municipality plans to sell a plot of land located on Hermes Street, a central area of the town. Iasonides informed the Cyprus News Agency that once a successful bidder is identified, the necessary documentation will be submitted to the central government for final approval.
Project Timeline and Costs
The estimated cost of the new town hall project is around €8.7 million, excluding value-added tax. Iasonides highlighted that this plan has been in development for decades and is crucial for the community. He stated, “The plot will be sold and with the money we receive, we will proceed with the assignment of the renovation of the old Larnaca hospital with the aim of transforming it into a new town hall.”
Municipal Services Relocation
Once the new town hall is completed, all municipal services currently housed in the existing town hall on Athens Avenue, situated opposite Finikoudes beach, will be relocated to the new facility. Iasonides expressed hopes that the renovated building will reflect the architectural and cultural heritage of Larnaca, stating, “With the renovation, a space of historical value will finally be properly utilised, as the buildings which make it up are of architectural and cultural interest, while it is a central point of reference, inextricably linked to the lives and the experiences of the residents of Larnaca.”
Creating a Modern Civic Space
The municipality’s objectives include creating a functional and efficient town hall that serves as an ornament for Larnaca. Iasonides emphasised that the new facility must meet the town’s requirements and embody its image, especially in light of its upcoming role as the European Capital of Culture.

The contractor for the renovation project is expected to be announced in August, with construction anticipated to take approximately 15 months. This timeline suggests the building could be completed by early 2028. Iasonides noted that since the old hospital is classified as a listed building, the municipality will be eligible for a state grant to support the renovation.

In his remarks, Iasonides acknowledged the long-held aspirations of Larnaca residents for a new town hall. He stated, “We owe it to the residents of Larnaca who dreamed of it, envisioned it, and need it, but we owe it above all to our town itself.” The current town hall, which is privately owned, will be rented out to a new tenant once the new facility opens its doors.
