  • The ongoing dispute regarding the cost-of-living allowance (CoLA) has prompted the labour ministry to announce that intensive efforts to resolve the situation are still underway.

In a statement released on Friday, the ministry highlighted that the aim is to foster convergences between workers and employers. The ministry expressed optimism regarding the continued positive approach from both trade unions and employers’ organisations.

However, the meetings held earlier between Labour Minister Yiannis Panayiotou, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, and representatives from both sides concluded with contrasting interpretations. Trade unions emerged from the discussions with a sense of frustration, accusing employers of attempting to undermine the CoLA agreement.

Peo secretary-general Sotiroula Charalambous voiced her disappointment, stating, “Unfortunately, with what we heard today, we have gone backwards. It is obvious that we are at an impasse.” She stressed that unions are united in their stance that CoLA should apply to all workers.

In response, Deok chairman Stelios Christodoulou labelled the employers’ proposals as “wrong,” while Sek secretary-general Andreas Matsas emphasised that the employers’ position diverges significantly from a framework that could lead to a genuine resolution.

On the other hand, employers expressed a more positive outlook. Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) chairman Stavros Stavrou indicated that the dialogue is ongoing and stated, “We want the conditions for a successful outcome of the dialogue to exist. We are available at any time to move forward.”

Employers’ and Industrialists’ Federation (Oev) chairman George Pantelides reiterated the employers’ commitment to further discussions. He underscored the importance of maintaining a constructive atmosphere, noting, “Our main goal is to find a solution to a time-consuming issue, if you like.” Pantelides called for trade union representatives to approach negotiations with an open mind to facilitate progress.

The situation remains delicate as both sides prepare for further meetings. Trade unions are set to convene on Monday to discuss their next steps, signalling a possibility of escalating actions if their demands for CoLA implementation are not met.
