The ban targets plastic bags that have a thickness between 15 and 50 microns, a move officials believe is crucial for safeguarding both the environment and public health. The deputy prime minister, Fikri Ataoglu, emphasised the urgency of this action, stating that microplastic pollution has reached unprecedented levels in both North Cyprus and globally.
Plastic bags: Urgent Measures Against Plastic Pollution
In his statement, Ataoglu remarked on the necessity for “urgent and effective measures” to combat the rising tide of microplastics. The environmental protection department has already completed the requisite legal regulations and is currently rolling out awareness campaigns to inform the public about the impending changes.
“Our goal is to protect nature by reducing plastic use, prevent the formation of microplastics, and leave a cleaner environment for future generations,” he added.
Previous Restrictions and Their Impact
This latest initiative follows earlier restrictions enacted in July 2023, which prohibited the provision of single-use plastic products at retail locations without a fee. The earlier ban encompassed a range of items, including plastic earbuds (with exceptions for medical use), as well as single-use plastic cutlery, plates, cups, straws, and takeaway meal containers made of plastic and polystyrene.
The Turkish Cypriot chamber of commerce had previously expressed concerns about the feasibility of enforcing compliance among international brands, including popular coffee chains like Gloria Jeans and EspressoLab. However, contrary to those fears, both chains have successfully adapted by introducing paper straws in their North Cyprus branches, while continuing to offer plastic straws in locations outside of Cyprus.
Public Awareness Initiatives Underway
The environmental protection department is launching information campaigns to ensure that residents are aware of the new regulations ahead of the enforcement date. These efforts are pivotal in facilitating a smooth transition away from plastic bags and promoting more sustainable practices among the public.
