The Iranian embassy in Nicosia has emphasised that its relationship with Cyprus remains robust and unaffected by the escalating regional tensions, insisting that Tehran has never initiated aggression.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the embassy reaffirmed the cordial ties between Tehran and Nicosia, particularly after a drone strike targeted the United Kingdom’s Sovereign Base Area in Akrotiri. The embassy stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran takes pride in its steadfast policy of not engaging in aggressive acts against any state.”
Highlighting their collaborative history, the Iranian officials noted that both nations share a longstanding and constructive relationship, marked by mutual trust and a notable absence of conflict. They expressed their commitment to maintaining these positive relations, asserting that the situation remains unchanged despite regional conflicts.
Iran’s stance, as articulated in the embassy’s statement, is that all actions taken are rooted in the right to self-defence, responding only to acts of aggression. This perspective is crucial in the context of ongoing regional dynamics, particularly following the recent military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iranian targets.
Additionally, the embassy referenced the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, highlighting Iran’s willingness to re-engage in negotiations with Washington in 2025. This move was described as a gesture of goodwill, aimed at fostering diplomatic resolutions.
However, the Iranian embassy also noted the challenges posed by military actions that have occurred amid these diplomatic efforts. The embassy pointed to the coordinated attacks launched by Israel and the United States, which began on February 28 and have targeted significant Iranian military figures and facilities. These operations, dubbed Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the US Department of Defence, have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region.
In light of these developments, the Iranian embassy reiterated the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving disputes and misunderstandings. The firm belief in addressing conflicts through peaceful means underscores Iran’s approach towards its relationship with Cyprus and the broader international community.
