  • A 32-year-old Greek Cypriot man was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking after British Bases police investigated his claims of accidentally entering occupied territories.

The man, a resident of Nicosia district, was detained early in the morning at approximately 4:00 am. He was reportedly attempting to return to the government-controlled areas through an uncontrolled crossing point near the road leading from Xylotymbou to the Strovilia checkpoint.

In his first statement to the police, the suspect claimed he had crossed into the occupied territory inadvertently while seeking a place to relieve himself. He said he noticed lights directed at him, which he believed came from a guard post operated by occupation authorities. According to his account, he panicked and fled back into government-controlled territory, abandoning his vehicle during the escape.

However, investigations by British Bases Dhekelia police have raised doubts about his narrative. Evidence gathered suggests that the man may have deliberately crossed between the two territories rather than doing so by accident.

As a result of these findings, police took the necessary steps to charge him with involvement in drug smuggling operations. Following his arrest, he was charged in writing and released. He is scheduled to appear before Dhekelia police in two weeks for further proceedings.

The British Sovereign Base Areas, which encompass parts of the buffer zone between the two sides of Cyprus, operate their own police force with jurisdiction over the territory. This incident highlights the complexities and ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning border crossings and illegal activities.
