Birdwatchers enjoying a day at the park spotted the distressed heron, which was found with its legs ensnared by discarded fishing lines or threads littering the area. Concerned for the bird’s wellbeing, they promptly alerted the Forestry Department.
Responding swiftly, Forestry officers arrived with the necessary equipment to assess the situation. Recognising the risk posed by the height of the tree, they made the decision to cut it down to facilitate a safe rescue.
After a careful operation, the heron was retrieved without suffering any physical injuries; however, the ordeal had left it exhausted and dehydrated. Immediate first aid was administered on-site to help stabilise the bird.
The heron was then transported to the Game and Fauna Service Sanatorium, where it will be monitored until it fully recovers. As part of the recovery protocol, Veterinary Services will perform blood analyses to ensure the bird’s health.
