Phased Redevelopment Journey
The redevelopment was executed in three distinct phases, with the final stage concluding recently at a cost of approximately €314,000. The initial phase began years ago with an investment of about €250,000, while the second phase, finalised in July 2018, amounted to €267,000. All phases were designed by the Architectural Workshop of Agisilaou and Kalava.
Funding Sources and Community Support
Funding for the first two phases was sourced from the State Budget. The final phase benefited from €200,000 from the EU LEADER programme, complemented by additional funding from the State Budget through the Paphos Provincial Administration. This financial support underscores the commitment to enhancing the area’s natural heritage.
Environmental Significance and Protection
Known as the “Meteora of Cyprus,” Episkopi Rock is the largest monolith in the country, standing 70 metres high and extending 250 metres in length. It is not only a geological marvel but also plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, serving as a habitat for various protected species of flora and fauna. The site is part of the Mamonia Geological Complex, which has earned it a designation as a protected area, further highlighting its environmental importance.
Looking Ahead: Tourism and Promotion
Tourism officials in Paphos are optimistic that the rock’s new appearance, coupled with increased publicity in 2025, will position it as a major tourist draw this summer. The enhancements aim to attract a broad spectrum of visitors, ensuring that Episkopi Rock is not just a destination for climbers but a place of interest for everyone.
