Electric and hybrid vehicles continue to gain traction in Cyprus, as recent statistics reveal a significant shift in consumer preferences towards greener options. According to the state statistical service, Cystat, the total number of motor vehicle registrations in the first ten months of 2025 increased by 4.2 per cent, totalling 44,732 registrations, compared to 42,930 during the same period in 2024.
Electric and: Rise in Total Vehicle Registrations
Passenger saloon cars made up the majority of these registrations, accounting for 34,782 vehicles—a 4.0 per cent rise from 33,440 in 2024. Among these, 12,954 were new cars, representing 37.2 per cent of the total, while 21,828 were used vehicles, making up 62.8 per cent. Additionally, there was a notable increase in rental cars, which saw a remarkable rise of 33.8 per cent, reaching 4,866.
Shift Towards Environmentally Friendly Vehicles
Cystat’s report indicates a marked shift in consumer preferences, as the share of petrol-powered passenger cars fell to 42.5 per cent, down from 49.5 per cent in 2024. Diesel cars also saw a decline, dropping to 8.6 per cent from 10 per cent the previous year. In contrast, the popularity of electric vehicles rose from 3.8 per cent in 2024 to 4.8 per cent in 2025. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles experienced a more substantial increase, growing from 36.7 per cent to 44.1 per cent.
Milestone for New Registrations
This year marks a significant milestone for Cyprus, as nearly half of all new passenger saloon cars registered thus far have been either hybrid or fully electric models. This trend reflects a growing awareness and preference among consumers for more sustainable transportation options.
Other Vehicle Categories Show Growth
The data also highlighted increases in other vehicle categories. Registrations of motor coaches and buses rose to 167, up from 125 during the same period last year. Goods conveyance vehicles reached 5,142, marking a 6.6 per cent increase compared to 4,823 in 2024. Within this category, rental vehicles surged by 23.3 per cent to 238, while light goods vehicles grew by 6.6 per cent to 4,111, and heavy goods vehicles advanced by 3.1 per cent to 594. However, the number of mopeds under 50cc saw a sharp decline, falling to 190 from 627 in the previous year.
Motorcycles Show Positive Growth
In contrast to mopeds, motorcycles over 50cc noted a significant increase of 17.0 per cent, reaching 3,916 registrations compared to 3,348 last year. This growth in motorcycle registrations suggests a diverse range of consumer preferences within the two-wheeler category.
October 2025 Registrations Highlight Continued Growth
Focusing specifically on October 2025, Cystat reported that total registrations of motor vehicles reached 4,520, reflecting a 9.9 per cent increase from the 4,111 registered in October 2024. Passenger saloon cars alone saw an 11.7 per cent increase, rising to 3,457 from 3,096 during the same month last year.
Collecting Data for Insights
The findings presented in the report were gathered on a monthly basis, encompassing all newly registered motor vehicles recorded by the road transport department. This consistent data collection allows for reliable insights into the trends shaping the vehicle market in Cyprus.
