- Edek has officially refused to accept the resignation of party leader Nikos Anastasiou, who stepped down following the party's disheartening performance in last month's parliamentary election.
Anastasiou had chosen to resign after Edek failed to secure any seats, garnering a mere 3.25 per cent of the vote—the lowest in its 56-year history. Despite his resignation attempt, he will continue to lead the party for the time being, with a conference planned for November to discuss future strategies and leadership.
Taking over the leadership in June of the previous year, Anastasiou succeeded Marinos Sizopoulos, who had stepped down after a disappointing result in the 2024 European Parliament election, where Edek received only five per cent of the vote. Anastasiou’s leadership has been marked by efforts to unify the party, but he expressed disappointment at the lack of support from some members.
Reacting to the recent election results, Anastasiou stated, “The result does not please us and unfortunately is an injustice to both Edek and to Cyprus itself.” He acknowledged the internal divisions within the party that he believes contributed to their electoral defeat, highlighting his commitment to uniting Edek from the very beginning of his tenure.
“From the first day I took over as Edek leader, I did everything humanly possible to gather and unite the peace of our party. Despite my continuous and sincere efforts, some fellow activists preferred to stay away,” he lamented.
Although he has taken responsibility for the party’s performance, he also called on others to acknowledge their roles in the situation, asking, “Shouldn’t they take on their responsibilities for seeing the danger Edek was facing and choosing to stay away?” Anastasiou’s future as leader now hinges on the outcomes of the upcoming party conference, where Edek’s direction and leadership will be discussed further.
