Quality healthcare remains a top priority of the administration, as reiterated by Health Minister Michael Damianos during the inauguration of the new “Mother and Child” department at Paphos general hospital on Monday.
During the event, Damianos expressed the government’s unwavering support for every woman, newborn, and child, emphasising that citizens should feel assured of receiving professional and compassionate care in all public hospitals.
Key to this vision is a focus on ongoing staff training, infrastructure enhancements, and fostering closer collaboration among health professionals. These elements are seen as essential for developing a modern and equitable health system.
Healthcare: Integration of Services for Enhanced Care
The new department signifies a significant move towards better healthcare delivery by merging previously separate units of gynaecology, obstetrics, and paediatrics into a fully integrated facility aimed at streamlining coordination. Damianos highlighted that this will not only improve support for families but will also reduce the necessity for patient transfers across districts.
Investment in Infrastructure and Equipment
Damianos also pointed out that the hospital is undergoing expansion works in the administration department, alongside initiatives to install photovoltaic systems to promote sustainability. This is part of a broader effort to modernise healthcare facilities.
Kypros Stavridis, General Executive Director of the state health services organisation (Okypy), elaborated on the ongoing upgrading of hospitals across Cyprus. He revealed that over €46.7 million has been invested in major infrastructure projects in recent years, with an additional €70 million allocated for new medical equipment.
Future Development Programme
Okypy is set to embark on an ambitious two-year €182 million development programme aimed at modernising facilities within the General Health System. Marinos Kallis, chairman of the Okypy board, praised the dedication of medical and support staff, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to continuously enhancing public hospitals and prioritising the needs of citizens.
The inauguration of the “Mother and Child” department represents a significant step forward in the government’s healthcare strategy, reflecting a strong commitment to improving health services for the population.
