Cyprus reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine during a teleconference of the Coalition of the Willing on Tuesday, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Russian offensive. The meeting, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, provided a platform for leaders to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine and the broader implications for Europe.
Unwavering support: Understanding the Impact of Conflict
During the teleconference, President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus expressed a deep understanding of the tragic consequences of war, drawing on his country’s own history of invasion and ongoing occupation. He highlighted the importance of solidarity with Ukraine at a time when the nation continues to face significant challenges due to Russian aggression.
Commitment to Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis echoed the president’s sentiments, stating that Cyprus stands firmly by the principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He emphasised that “internationally recognised borders could not be changed by force,” underlining Cyprus’ commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against the ongoing conflict.
Monitoring Developments and International Support
Letymbiotis further mentioned that Cyprus is actively monitoring the negotiation processes and the involvement of the United States in the situation. He pointed out that developments in Ukraine have a direct impact on Europe, which, he believes, has a responsibility to play an active role in resolving the crisis.
Cyprus’ Role in the EU Presidency
As part of its responsibilities during its EU presidency, Cyprus has made Ukraine a top priority. The country is collaborating with EU institutions and member states to push forward various support initiatives for Ukraine. This includes the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and implementing the European Council agreement from December, which involves a significant financial commitment of €90 billion to support Ukraine.
Reaffirming Support at the EU Foreign Affairs Council
Just a day prior to the teleconference, Cyprus’ unwavering support for Ukraine was reiterated at the EU Foreign Affairs Council. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, representing Cyprus, stated that the country, which itself is under partial occupation, remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine and advocates for the respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states.
Addressing Ongoing Russian Aggression
The council meeting focused on the continued Russian aggression towards Ukraine, as well as the broader geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Kombos asserted that the EU has made significant progress over the past four years in supporting Ukraine, but there remains much more to be done in both negotiations and practical support.
Sanctions and Future Actions
Kombos assured that Cyprus’ EU presidency will continue to strive towards achieving an agreement on the ambitious and robust 20th sanctions package currently under discussion. This package is seen as crucial for maintaining pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine in its efforts to restore peace and stability.
Looking Ahead
As the fourth anniversary of the Russian offensive approaches, Cyprus’ commitment to supporting Ukraine serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by nations under threat. With a history that resonates with Ukraine’s plight, Cyprus is determined to stand in solidarity with its fellow European nation, pushing for a resolution that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Through its actions and statements, Cyprus aims to foster a united European front against aggression and support Ukraine in navigating the complexities of its current situation. The ongoing discussions and efforts at both national and EU levels highlight the importance of collective action in the face of adversity.
