Limassol will be the centre of international maritime trade union events this September, highlighting Cyprus’s significant role in global maritime discussions. The events will feature the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Maritime Roundtable and the ITF Worldwide Inspectors Seminar, both of which are crucial for the advancement of maritime workers’ rights.
Maritime trade: ITF Maritime Roundtable Set for September 15-18
The ITF Maritime Roundtable is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 18 at the St Raphael Resort Hotel. This event, held every five years, is regarded as one of the most important gatherings in international trade unionism. It will bring together over 180 representatives from 140 countries to discuss vital issues concerning seafarers and dockers.
The roundtable will officially commence on September 15 at 9.30 am, with an opening address from Cyprus’s Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafiadis. Key figures in the maritime sector, including Charalambos Avgousti, general secretary of Omepege – Sek, and Paddy Crumlin, the ITF President, will also deliver greetings to attendees.
Focus on Cooperation and Rights of Workers
During the roundtable, participants will engage in discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation among trade unions and advocating for the rights of maritime workers globally. The ITF has been instrumental in addressing various challenges faced by seafarers, including issues related to safety, working conditions, and fair wages.
Omepege – Sek, the organisation representing Cypriot maritime workers, emphasised the significance of this event in fostering a united front among unions. “This roundtable is not just a meeting; it’s an opportunity to galvanise efforts towards protecting the rights of those who work at sea,” said Avgousti.
ITF Worldwide Inspectors Seminar to Follow
Following the Maritime Roundtable, the ITF Worldwide Inspectors Seminar will be held from September 22 to 25, also in Limassol. This seminar will gather more than 150 ITF inspectors representing over 100 ports from around the world. Its primary aim is to train and empower inspectors, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to effectively support and enforce the rights of maritime workers.
The opening session of the seminar will take place on September 22 at 9.30 am, with a welcome address from Marina Hadjimanolis, the Shipping Deputy Minister of Cyprus. The seminar is designed to enhance the inspectors’ ability to contribute to the ITF’s global campaigns.
Community Engagement through Beach Clean-Up
As part of the seminar’s programme, a beach clean-up is scheduled for September 23. This initiative highlights the environmental sensitivity of the trade union movement and illustrates the connection between social responsibility and the right to a sustainable future. “We want to show that our commitment extends beyond labour rights to include environmental stewardship,” Omepege – Sek remarked.
This clean-up event is expected to engage local volunteers and demonstrate the trade unions’ commitment to environmental issues, thereby fostering a sense of community and responsibility among participants.
Significance of Hosting Global Events
Hosting these significant international events positions Limassol as a key player in global maritime discussions. The choice of Cyprus reflects its strategic importance in maritime trade and the commitment of its trade unions to advocate for workers’ rights on an international stage.
“Cyprus has a rich maritime history, and events like these reinforce our position as a hub for maritime dialogue and activism,” stated a spokesperson for Omepege – Sek. The discussions and resolutions from these gatherings are likely to influence maritime policies worldwide, making it essential for local stakeholders to engage actively.
Looking Ahead
As both events approach, anticipation is building among participants and stakeholders in the maritime industry. The outcomes of the Maritime Roundtable and the Inspectors Seminar are expected to resonate beyond the conference rooms, impacting policies and practices related to maritime labour globally.
With Limassol preparing to welcome hundreds of international representatives, the events promise to be a landmark occasion for maritime trade unions, showcasing solidarity and collective action towards the betterment of all maritime workers.
