The UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus, known as Unficyp, will remain indispensable for as long as part of the island remains under Turkish occupation, said Cyprus’ permanent representative to the UN, Maria Michail, on Tuesday.

In her address to the fourth committee of the 80th UN General Assembly, Michail highlighted the essential role of peacekeeping missions in maintaining stability and peace. She emphasised that the mandates issued by the UN Security Council must be fully respected and implemented to ensure ongoing security.

“It is imperative that the UN Security Council remains at the centre of the peace and security architecture,” Michail asserted, underscoring the authority and responsibility of the Council in the region.

According to Michail, Unficyp plays a vital role in maintaining the fragile calm on the island, preventing numerous incidents from escalating into potential crises. She stated, “Unficyp continues to guarantee the fragile calm by the daily prevention of tens of incidences that could escalate into stability threats or even crises.”

Recognising the challenges faced by peacekeepers, Michail called for “unimpeded access and freedom of movement” for the force. This access is crucial for allowing peacekeepers to report accurately and implement their mandates effectively.

Highlighting Cyprus’ commitment to the peacekeeping mission, Michail noted that the country voluntarily contributes 35 per cent to Unficyp’s budget. She also expressed gratitude to the member states that provide military and police personnel to support the mission.

“Peace is a collective effort, and peacekeeping operations are an indispensable tool for peace and stability, requiring a shared vision and a strong political will and support,” Michail concluded, reinforcing the collaborative nature of international peacekeeping efforts.
