As storm Adel approaches, residents of Cyprus are bracing for its impact, with weather forecasts predicting a mix of rain, hail, and thunderstorms. The strong depression, which has already wreaked havoc in Greece, is expected to reach the island from late tonight.

Storm adel: Unsettling Weather on the Horizon

Originating over southern Italy, storm Adel has led to extensive flooding and significant damage in various areas of Greece, including suburbs in Athens. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Cyprus, effective from 23:00 tonight until 17:00 tomorrow (Sunday), indicating that isolated heavy thunderstorms are likely to affect the island at intervals.

Forecast of Heavy Showers and Hail

According to the Met Office, precipitation rates could range between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour during the storm. The initial impacts will be felt in the west and north of Cyprus, gradually spreading across the island. Residents are advised to prepare for possible hail in the areas experiencing the most intense storms.

Current Weather Conditions

Before the arrival of storm Adel, a high-pressure system is currently dominating the region, though harmful particles of dust are lingering in the atmosphere. As the day transitions from slightly overcast skies to more unsettled weather, temperatures are expected to rise to around 25 degrees Celsius inland and in coastal areas, while mountain regions will see cooler temperatures of about 13 degrees.

Evening Forecast for Cyprus

As evening falls, local showers and isolated storms are set to develop, particularly over the Troodos mountains, where sleet is also a possibility. Winds will be predominantly light to moderate, shifting to stronger gusts in windward areas, with temperatures anticipated to drop to 11 degrees Celsius inland and 14 degrees along the coast, reaching as low as 8 degrees in mountainous areas.

Continuing Weather Challenges

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the forecast does not improve significantly, with local heavy showers and isolated storms expected to persist. Hail may accompany the storm as variable winds strengthen. On Monday, similar weather patterns will continue, with showers expected at intervals, although clearer skies are anticipated on Tuesday, particularly in most areas, except for continued rain on Troodos.

Temperature Outlook

Temperatures are set to drop tomorrow, aligning with seasonal averages, and no significant changes are expected through early next week. Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for the effects of storm Adel as it makes its presence known across Cyprus.
