cyprus police — The EFEN Independent Student Movement has accused the Cyprus Police of an overt attack during an anti-occupation march that took place on Friday in Nicosia, culminating at the Ledra Street checkpoint.

According to the group’s statement, demonstrators were subjected to physical aggression as police reportedly shoved individuals and deployed tear gas at close range, particularly targeting underage students. The EFEN described these actions as an attempt to intimidate peaceful protesters.

In their statement, EFEN alleged that the police acted under government orders, claiming their intent was to sow fear within a mobilisation meant to express dissent against the ongoing occupation. They contended that the police, “without any provocation,” advanced their shields and forcefully pushed back demonstrators.

“On a day when we are protesting the pseudo-state, the Police chose to protect the occupiers and not do its job,” the group remarked. The accusations highlight growing tensions surrounding the political situation in Cyprus, where student groups feel increasingly compelled to voice their concerns regarding the occupation and the role of law enforcement in such protests.
