Research and innovation play a crucial role in shaping Cyprus’s future, according to Theodoros Loukaidis, director general of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF). As the European Researchers’ Night approaches its 19th year under the theme “Mission Possible: The Sequel”, Loukaidis emphasises how the event connects science with society, demonstrating the tangible impact of research on everyday life.
Scheduled for September 26 at the state fair grounds in Nicosia, the event will feature interactive experiments, over 70 pavilions, and holographic conversations with renowned scientists. Loukaidis notes that this year’s theme aligns with the five European Union Missions, which focus on addressing critical societal challenges such as climate change and health.
Research and: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Society
Loukaidis points out that the European Researchers’ Night is held simultaneously in over 450 cities across Europe, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors. He believes this highlights the essential role of science in society, stating, “It is no coincidence the event is held simultaneously in more than 450 cities in Europe, attracting over 1.5 million visitors.” The initiative aims to remind the public that scientific endeavours extend beyond laboratories and into the fabric of daily life.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Describing the event as both entertaining and educational, Loukaidis asserts that it fosters a culture of scientific inquiry. “It is an experience that entertains and inspires, cultivating a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation,” he explains. His vision is to encourage young people to engage with science and technology, ultimately leading to innovative entrepreneurship.
To further this goal, the RIF is launching the Future Founders Academy, which will provide new graduates with €25,000 in funding and consulting support. This initiative aims to equip participants with skills in innovative entrepreneurship and guide them towards developing new products.
Empowering Youth Through Practical Experience
Alongside this new academy, the RIF has been running the R&I Internships programme for the last four years. This initiative has allowed 189 students to gain practical experience in various businesses and organisations, enhancing their skills and providing vital industry connections. Loukaidis highlights, “The programme has also helped to build bridges with innovative businesses, while several participants have found employment after obtaining their degree.”
Addressing Brain Drain and Building a Research Hub
Looking to combat the brain drain phenomenon affecting Cyprus, Loukaidis emphasises the importance of sustainable job creation for young researchers. The forthcoming Post-doc programme is designed to support scientists while also fostering sustainable job opportunities. He asserts that young Cypriots are already demonstrating their potential, with innovative companies like Malloc and Freyia Labs successfully entering international markets.
Established companies such as Odyssey and Dynamic Works are also leveraging RIF support for product development and competitiveness. To ensure transparency, the RIF has made a comprehensive list of its beneficiaries available on its website.
Investing in a Brighter Future
Loukaidis believes that Cyprus has the potential to become a regional hub for research and innovation. With a budget exceeding €48 million earmarked for RIF calls in 2025 and a commitment to increasing participation in European programmes, the foundation is taking significant steps towards achieving this vision. “That is precisely why the European Researchers’ Night carries such special significance,” he remarks.
Ultimately, Loukaidis sees research and innovation as essential tools for constructing a better future. He concludes, “Research and innovation are the path to a better tomorrow, for a future that we do not just expect, but create.”
