In examining the trend over recent months, the acceleration in inflation becomes apparent. Earlier in the year, Cyprus saw rates of 3.0% in April, 1.5% in March, 0.9% in February, and 1.2% in January. By contrast, June 2025 recorded a mere 0.5% inflation rate.

In comparison, the euro area experienced a decline in annual inflation, easing to 2.8% in June from 3.2% in May. The European Union saw a similar trend, with inflation dropping from 3.3% to 2.9% in the same timeframe. A year prior, inflation rates in the euro area stood at 2.0% and 2.3% across the EU.

Price Increases Across Categories

Among the various sectors driving Cyprus’ inflation, recreation, sports, and culture recorded the largest annual increase with a staggering rise of 9.7% compared to June 2025. Restaurants and accommodation services followed closely with an 8.9% increase.

Conversely, clothing and footwear saw the largest annual declines, with prices dropping by 8.0%, while the information and communication sector reported a decrease of 2.9%.

Monthly Changes and Economic Contributions

From May to June, the most significant monthly price increases were in restaurants and accommodation services, which experienced a 3.4% rise. Other notable increases included a 1.9% increase in recreation, sports, and culture, alongside a 1.6% rise in housing and utilities.

Energy costs stood out with the largest annual increase, rising by 13.0% compared to June 2025. Monthly, services recorded the strongest increase, climbing 1.8% between May and June.

Comparative Inflation Rates in Europe

Across the European Union, a total of 22 member states witnessed lower annual inflation rates in June compared to May, while three countries maintained their rates and two experienced increases. The lowest annual inflation rates were noted in Sweden at 1.0%, the Czech Republic at 1.1%, and Denmark at 1.8%. On the other end of the spectrum, Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate at 9.2%, followed by Lithuania at 5.4% and Bulgaria at 5.2%.

Contributions to Euro Area Inflation

According to Eurostat, services contributed significantly to the euro area inflation rate, adding 1.51 percentage points. Energy contributed 0.77 percentage points, while food, alcohol, and tobacco accounted for 0.29 percentage points. Non-energy industrial goods contributed 0.18 percentage points.

The latest figures from Cyprus illustrate a distinct divergence as inflationary pressures appear to ease across much of Europe, contrasting sharply with the marked acceleration in consumer prices experienced in Cyprus. Higher costs in energy, leisure activities, and hospitality services are key contributors to this trend.
