A total of 22 people, primarily Cypriot citizens, have found themselves trapped in Tanzania amid ongoing unrest and a curfew imposed in the country. The Cyprus Foreign Ministry is actively engaging with these individuals to ensure their safe return, as confirmed by ministry spokesman Theodoros Gkotsis in a statement to the Cyprus News Agency.
- Furthermore, Cypriots are encouraged to stay informed through both international and local media and to minimise unnecessary travel during this turbulent period.
- The ministry also encourages Cypriots abroad to register on the online platform Connect2CY to ensure their safety and facilitate communication.
Among those affected are 14 private school pupils who were in Tanzania as part of a volunteer programme, accompanied by two chaperones and two adults from Greece. The remaining four Cypriots are in the country for various personal reasons.
Tanzania: Efforts Underway for Safe Return
The Foreign Ministry has swiftly activated its Crisis Management Centre to maintain communication with the trapped individuals, working closely with the High Commission in Nairobi, which oversees affairs in Tanzania. Currently, there are no available flights for evacuation, but the ministry is committed to informing the group about necessary precautions and developments. Gkotsis stated, “As soon as the most correct and safe way is found, the relevant steps will be taken for them to return as soon as possible.”
