However, Theodosiou emphasised that individual daily habits play a critical role in combating food waste. The students participating in the competition showcased innovative and practical ideas that highlighted the potential for change when individuals take initiative.

Cyprus is already implementing a national action plan focused on a circular economy, aiming to reduce waste and promote sustainable resource use. This plan is an essential part of the country’s broader strategy to support viable environmental practices.

The role of education is pivotal in this endeavour, according to Theodosiou. She noted that the projects presented by students were not merely theoretical; they represented a proactive approach to solving pressing issues. The younger generation, she asserted, is not passively waiting for solutions but is actively engaging in the planning process.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Cyprus is also enhancing its national strategy on climate change, with a focus on resilience. Theodosiou pointed out that climate change is an ongoing reality affecting the island, characterised by rising temperatures, reduced rainfall, and increased strain on natural resources.

The challenges posed by food waste and climate change are intertwined, and addressing them requires a collective effort from all sectors of society. With a concerted push for change, Cyprus aims to turn its status as the EU’s highest food waste producer into an opportunity for innovation and improvement.
