This significant gathering has been convened by French President Emmanuel Macron and is set to take place at the Elysee Palace. It brings together representatives from over 30 nations, including 24 European Union member states, all except Hungary, Malta, and Slovakia. Additional participants include Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Among the dignitaries attending the meeting alongside Damianos and Macron are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

The timing of this meeting follows a recent conversation between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. During their call, Zelenskiy emphasised the importance of Ukraine being a top priority for Cyprus, particularly as the island nation holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of the year.

Zelenskiy stated, “Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is one of the security guarantees for us, and for our part we are always doing everything necessary.” He also shared insights about ongoing diplomatic efforts and interactions with American partners, stressing the importance of continual work towards peace.

Expressing gratitude, Zelenskiy remarked, “I thank Cyprus and the entire Cypriot people for their support. I thank the president for such warm words about Ukrainians and Ukraine.”
