Raouna’s remarks were made at the EU House in Nicosia, where European officials gathered to reaffirm their support for Cyprus. They reiterated their dedication to the island’s reunification in accordance with UN resolutions and EU law. Raouna noted that Cyprus has made significant strides during its EU presidency.
Six Months of Leadership
“For six months – 181 days – Europe’s heart beats from its southeasternmost member state, its last member state under occupation,” Raouna stated, emphasising the importance of Cyprus within the EU framework. “From this corner of our Union, Europe beats loudly, because Cyprus carries a deeply European soul. It stands deeply and proudly pro-European,” she continued.
Cyprus’ Role in European Autonomy
Raouna described the current geopolitical climate as one of heightened tension and uncertainty, asserting that Cyprus’ foreign policy is firmly rooted in Western values and an unabashed European identity. “We have been working – both prior and during the Presidency – with the conviction that there are no limits to what Cyprus and Cypriots can achieve,” she stated.
Vision for the Future
Raouna elaborated on the vision encapsulated in the Cyprus Presidency motto, “An Autonomous Union, Open to the World.” She described this vision as timely and necessary, highlighting the need for real substance in the pursuit of European autonomy, rather than treating it as a mere theoretical aspiration.
Addressing Regional Challenges
During her speech, Raouna also mentioned recent council meetings held in Cyprus, where leaders discussed pressing regional crises and broader security concerns. “This is our neighbourhood, it is the EU’s neighbourhood, and it is vital for European stability, security and competitiveness,” she asserted.
Acknowledging Cyprus’ Strategic Role
Raouna’s comments were echoed by European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis, who highlighted the significance of the situation in the eastern Mediterranean. “Cyprus continues to be affected by the consequences of the Turkish invasion and the ongoing division of the island. This is a European issue that directly concerns sovereignty, security and respect for international law,” Kadis remarked.
Commitment to Reunification
Kadis reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, stating that such a resolution would contribute significantly to stability in the eastern Mediterranean and European security as a whole. He emphasised that the EU stands firmly by Cyprus amid regional instability.
Strengthening Economic Foundations
“The EU is placing increasing emphasis not only on reinforcing its defence capabilities, but also on strengthening its economic and social foundations,” Kadis added. This includes securing supply chains, investing in innovation and skills, and ensuring that the social model remains robust and inclusive.
Shaping Europe’s Agenda
Panicos Pourgourides, head of the European Commission representation in Cyprus, described the island’s EU presidency as an opportunity to help shape Europe’s agenda during a time of profound geopolitical, economic, and technological transformation. “In a volatile region, Cyprus remains Europe’s bridge to the eastern Mediterranean and the wider area,” he noted.
Celebrating Resilience and Solidarity
Pourgourides also reiterated the EU’s commitment to the reunification of Cyprus, stating that the bloc is ready to actively support the process towards a solution. “Today, as we celebrate Europe Day here in Nicosia, let us celebrate resilience, solidarity and confidence in the future,” he concluded.
Adapting to Geopolitical Changes
Thea Pieridou, head of the European Parliament office in Cyprus, highlighted the significance of the current geopolitical landscape. “We are living through a time of significant change, where geopolitical developments are reshaping the way we think about security, energy and our economies,” she said. Pieridou emphasised the EU’s vital role in promoting peace, stability, cooperation, and bridge-building in an increasingly interconnected world.

Pieridou also recognised the importance of Cyprus’ EU presidency in steering discussions on key European priorities and ensuring coordination within the bloc.
