- While this December may not yet mirror the epic weather events of past years, it’s clear that winter is making its presence felt in Cyprus.
Cyprus big: A Look Back at December Weather History
Historically, the last month of the year has been a time for dramatic weather events in Cyprus. One notable instance was in December 2018, when the Penelope system unleashed nearly 10 storms, accompanied by thunderstorms, large hail, and high winds, leading to flooded streets and spectacular lightning displays along the coast. The archives of Cyprus Mail from that period read like a dramatic saga.
The winter of 1968-69 stands out as one of the wettest years in Cyprus history, with several districts receiving over double their usual monthly rainfall. This resulted in widespread flooding, road washouts, and significant damage to agriculture.
December 1992 brought an island-wide chill, with Troodos experiencing frosts as low as -9°C. Yet, it was December 2001 that would earn the title of “Cyprus’ Big Freeze”, as heavy snowfall reached the mid-altitude villages, creating a picturesque winter scene reminiscent of classic Christmas cards.
Current Weather Forecast for December
This weekend, the weather across the island appears to be milder than the dramatic conditions of past Decembers. In Nicosia, both Friday and Saturday are expected to see some afternoon showers. However, by Sunday, the skies will clear, bringing a pleasant 20°C.
In Limassol, light showers are anticipated on Friday and Saturday, with a touch of afternoon rain on Sunday as temperatures gradually decrease from the mid-20s. Larnaca will start with partly sunny conditions on Friday, turning rather cloudy on Saturday, before showers arrive on Sunday as northern winds strengthen.
Meanwhile, Paphos will experience passing showers on Friday, transitioning to a mostly cloudy Saturday, with wetter conditions on Sunday. In the Ayia Napa region, expect a morning shower followed by a mostly cloudy Saturday, with a few brisk showers on Sunday.
Up in Troodos, conditions will remain partly sunny but chilly, with temperatures hovering in the mid-single digits overnight and only reaching the mid-teens during the day, perfectly in tune with the seasonal expectations for the highlands.
Looking Ahead: A Shift in Weather
However, as we move past Sunday, the weather is set to change significantly. Starting Monday, clouds will thicken across the island, signalling a shift towards winter conditions. By Tuesday, full-on winter rain is expected, with Paphos facing heavy downpours and Nicosia experiencing steady showers. Larnaca and Ayia Napa will also see heavier rainfall, while parts of the Limassol coast may be hit with intense storms.
While this December may not yet mirror the epic weather events of past years, it’s clear that winter is making its presence felt in Cyprus.
