Plans for expanded film cooperation between Cyprus and India are advancing as Bollywood sets its sights on shooting in Protaras. A recent meeting brought together Indian film producers, including director Anjali Bhushan, with Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis and Paralimni-Deryneia Mayor Giorgos Nikoletos to explore the potential for international film projects on the island.
During their discussions, the delegation examined how Protaras’ stunning landscapes and well-developed tourism infrastructure could serve as an ideal backdrop for Bollywood productions. The local municipality expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of hosting these film shoots, highlighting the potential benefits for both the film and tourism sectors.
The municipality stated, “We are keen to contribute substantially to hosting film shoots and developing film production in the region.” This reflects a broader strategy to enhance international visibility and foster collaborative opportunities between various industries.
Interest from the Indian delegation was palpable, with representatives identifying Protaras as a location offering unique natural settings suited for cinematic storytelling. This visit comes on the heels of an announcement regarding the first-ever Bollywood film set to be shot in Cyprus, as confirmed by President Nikos Christodoulides during a state visit to India.
Highlighting Cyprus’ appeal, President Christodoulides described the island as an “open studio,” emphasising that international film cooperation aligns with deeper economic and cultural ties between Cyprus and India. He noted that creative industries not only create jobs but also attract investment, bolster tourism, and inspire new business ventures.
The collaboration reflects a significant step forward in establishing Cyprus as a prominent location for film production, promising to enhance the island’s profile on the global cinematic stage while providing a boost to local economies.
