Cyprus’s new public emergency warning system, CY-Alert, is set to launch on June 2, bringing a vital tool for real-time notifications during emergencies. The Civil Defence Force announced that test alerts will be sent to mobile phones in selected communities across the island until June 15.
The CY-Alert system aims to provide timely information to residents in affected areas, allowing them to take necessary precautions for their safety and property. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing public safety and preparedness.
Test Alerts Scheduled Across the Island
Residents can expect test alerts marked with the phrases “TEST – TEST – TEST” or “EXERCISE – EXERCISE – EXERCISE.” These notifications will be accompanied by a loud sound and vibration, clearly indicating that they are practice alerts and do not require any action from the public.
The following schedule outlines the test alerts across various communities:
- Tuesday, June 2: 11am–12pm in Pissouri and Moniatis
- Tuesday, June 2: 4pm–5pm in Psevdas
- Sunday, June 7: 10am–11am in Argaka, Avgorou, and Ora
- Wednesday, June 10: 4pm–5pm in Fini and Kalopanayiotis
- Monday, June 15: 3pm–4pm island-wide alert for a missing person
It’s important to note that alerts may also reach neighbouring communities, ensuring a broader coverage during these tests.
Final Island-Wide Notification for Missing Persons
The test on June 15 will be particularly significant, simulating an island-wide alert for a missing person. This distinct notification will differ from the earlier localised tests, showcasing the system’s capability to address various emergency situations.
How to Activate CY-Alert Notifications
To ensure they receive CY-Alert notifications, residents must activate the appropriate settings on their mobile devices. The Civil Defence Force provides guidance for this process through their helpline at 1450. Additionally, video instructions are accessible on their official social media accounts, making it easier for the public to stay informed.
