In total, Cypriots embarked on 3.3 million trips throughout the year, resulting in 18 million overnight stays and an impressive expenditure of €2.4 billion. Notably, over half of these trips—51.9 per cent—were international, demonstrating a strong inclination towards travel beyond their borders.

Cypriots travel: Greece Takes the Lead

When it comes to preferred destinations, Greece emerged as the standout choice, attracting 34.7 per cent of all trips made by Cypriots. This popularity translated into 26.2 per cent of the total overnight stays and 26 per cent of overall spending. The allure of Greece is evident, as it continues to captivate Cypriot travellers.

The UK Remains a Strong Contender

The United Kingdom followed closely behind, capturing 10.5 per cent of trips abroad. Cypriots spent 15.3 per cent of their nights in the UK, contributing to 11.6 per cent of total travel expenditure. This continued interest highlights the longstanding ties and appeal the UK holds for residents of Cyprus.

While Greece and the UK dominated, other destinations also featured prominently in Cypriot travel plans. Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands ranked high in terms of the number of trips taken, with Italy standing out as a notable choice for expenditure alongside the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The report also sheds light on travel trends across the European Union. On average, EU residents made trips lasting five nights—four nights for domestic travel and eight for international journeys. Interestingly, nearly three-quarters of all trips within the EU were taken domestically, while only 29 per cent involved travel abroad.

Insights into European Preferences

Italy and Spain emerged as the most popular foreign destinations for Europeans, with Italy accounting for 10.7 per cent of trips and Spain closely following at 10.4 per cent. Spain, however, led in both nights spent and expenditure, showing its strong appeal among European travellers. Meanwhile, non-EU travel remained more limited, with the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Switzerland being the most favoured destinations beyond the bloc.

Conclusion

As Cypriots plan their travels for 2024, their choices reflect a strong preference for Greece and the UK, highlighting enduring cultural and economic connections. With substantial expenditure on overseas trips, it is clear that travel remains a cherished pursuit for many in Cyprus.
