Thought-Provoking Theatre Opens the Month
Kicking off the month’s events is ‘Lovers’ Chorus’, a thought-provoking play by Portuguese writer and director Tiago Rodrigues. Scheduled for February 5 and 6, this production will be presented in Greek by Onassis Stegi. The play delves deep into the relationship between two individuals faced with a life-and-death experience, offering a poignant exploration of love and connection.
Dramatic Narratives Reflecting Struggles
Following this, on February 7, the AntiLogos Theatre will present ‘Keffiyeh / Made in China’, a powerful piece by Palestinian playwright Dalia Taha. Directed by Eleni Anastasiou, this adaptation marks its first presentation in Greek. The play is an anthology of vignettes that encapsulate the myriad human experiences within a war zone, reflecting both the pain and resilience of those affected by conflict.
Celebrating Cinematic Artistry
On February 9 and 10, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of award-winning short films from the Drama International Short Film Festival. These screenings, co-organised by the department of contemporary culture, the Rialto Theatre, and Limassol Cine Clubs, will take place at the Rialto Theatre and will be free of charge, with English subtitles provided. This initiative aims to promote cinematic artistry and engage local film enthusiasts.
A Musical Tribute to the Cello
Music lovers will not want to miss ‘My Cello World’ on February 11, featuring Mariliza Papadouri Papangelidi. Celebrating a remarkable 40-year relationship with the cello, Mariliza will perform iconic works from the classical repertoire by composers including Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Chopin. She will be joined by the acclaimed pianist Anita Tomasevich, creating a dialogue between cello and piano that promises to captivate the audience.
Uniting for a Worthy Cause
February 14 will see a special charity event titled ‘Together – One Dream, One Wish, One Voice, One Hope’, dedicated to supporting children battling cancer. Under the direction of Stelios Michaelides, this artistic event will feature performances from choirs, dancers, actors, and artists from both Cyprus and abroad. All net proceeds from the evening will be donated to the association One Dream One Wish, providing essential support to children and their families during challenging times.
Comedy Reflecting Contemporary Cypriot Life
As the month draws to a close before the carnival festivities, the Rialto Theatre will host ‘Edo Leme SOS’ on February 17 and 18. This comedy by Yiorgos Tsiakkas cleverly plays on the city’s name while offering a satirical look at contemporary Cypriot reality. The production features an ensemble of eleven talented actors, navigating a series of comic situations that highlight both the virtues and flaws of human nature.
