Chinese films will be screened in Nicosia and Limassol this June as part of the inaugural Chinese Film Week in Cyprus, running from June 10 to 15. This exciting event is presented by the Embassy of China in Cyprus, the China Film Administration, and the deputy ministry of culture.

Chinese film: Opening Night Festivities
The festivities will commence on June 10 at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. The first screening will be a special youth presentation of the animated feature Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector at 4pm, aimed at introducing younger audiences to one of China’s beloved animated franchises.
The official Opening Ceremony later that evening will host distinguished guests from various sectors, including politics, business, academia, and the arts, alongside members of the diplomatic corps and the local Chinese community.
A Showcase of Cinematic Talent
Among the highlights of the opening night will be the premiere of The Sound of Shanghai, directed by acclaimed Cypriot artist Marios Joannou Elia. This film offers a unique portrait of Shanghai, blending music with its rich cultural heritage, showcasing the city’s traditions and modern vibrancy. Due to its exclusive nature, this screening will be by invitation only.

A Variety of Films to Enjoy
The festivities continue on June 11 with a screening of A Table for Two at Pantheon Theatre at 8pm. This warm and engaging film explores urban food culture and the personal journeys of youth in contemporary China.
On June 12, the Chinese Film Week travels to Limassol, where audiences will enjoy the animated feature I Am What I Am at the Cyprus University of Technology (Tepak). This film, supported by the Confucius Institute at Tepak, draws inspiration from traditional Chinese lion dancing and follows young dreamers striving to overcome challenges.
That same evening, Nicosia’s Pantheon Theatre will screen the Hong Kong comedy Night King, which offers a glimpse into Cantonese humour and urban life.
Action and Drama Take Centre Stage
Saturday, June 13, will feature the action thriller The Shadow’s Edge, blending high-tech crime with psychological suspense. The following evening, audiences can enjoy It’s OK, a contemporary drama exploring family dynamics, generational differences, and women’s personal growth through a blend of humour and heartfelt storytelling.
Closing Celebrations and Final Screenings
Chinese Film Week will conclude on June 15 at K-Cineplex in Nicosia with a Closing Ceremony and the screening of Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert. Set against the backdrop of ancient China’s Western Regions, this action-packed film combines martial arts, adventure, and historical storytelling.
Representatives from the China Film Administration, along with film production and distribution companies, are expected to attend the closing events, providing audiences with the opportunity to engage with directors and actors.
