electricity supply — Cyprus’s electricity supply is critically tight during peak evening hours, as highlighted by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC). Anticipated demand between 18:00 and 22:00 today and tomorrow raises concerns about the country’s ability to meet energy needs.
The TSOC has issued a warning regarding potential failures to fulfil demand due to simultaneous outages at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) generating units located at the Dhekelia and Vasilikos power stations. Despite EAC’s efforts to bring an additional unit online at Dhekelia, the situation remains precarious with limited available production levels.
As temperatures soar, the demand for electricity is expected to peak at 1,350 MW during midday and 1,100 MW in the evening. The intense heatwave is predicted to persist through tomorrow, with a welcome respite expected on Friday when temperatures are projected to dip below 40 degrees Celsius.
In light of these circumstances, TSOC has urged the public to conserve electricity during peak hours by using electrical appliances sparingly. Their priority remains ensuring the safe operation of Cyprus’s electricity system amidst these challenges.
