Theodosiou pointed out that low registration rates and delays in enforcing existing legislation contribute to a growing crisis of animal abandonment and abuse. She noted, “We need to act now to ensure that our pets are protected and that we are fostering a culture of responsible pet ownership.”
At the event, Theodosiou emphasised the importance of bolstering veterinary services and animal police, calling for enhanced support for local government authorities in their efforts to care for animals. She proposed educating the public on the responsibilities of pet ownership, which is vital in combating the issues of overpopulation and neglect.
Another key point raised was the need for an electronic platform dedicated to registering and monitoring abuse complaints. Such a system could provide a streamlined approach to handling cases of neglect and mistreatment, making it easier for authorities to intervene effectively.
