  • Compounding the situation, a turbine failure at the existing borehole supplying local households was reported on Tuesday, heightening fears that residents could soon face water shortages.

On Thursday, the department addressed media reports highlighting the stalled drilling efforts in Ayia Marina Chrysochous, firmly stating that all matters related to the project, including the exploitation of drilling and the management of water infrastructure, fall under the district’s purview.

Amid rising concerns about water scarcity on the island, which is grappling with low reservoir levels, reports surfaced on Wednesday indicating that authorities have yet to appoint a project leader or install the necessary pump in the borehole. This comes despite the pressing need for water supply in the area.

The drilling project, with an investment of €35,000, was launched two and a half months ago, aiming to deliver approximately 1,000 cubic metres of water daily. However, it has failed to alleviate the water shortage affecting nearby communities.

The water development department elaborated that while the geological department is responsible for locating and test-pumping boreholes, their role has been limited to establishing drilling protection zones and issuing water-abstraction permits.

In light of the ongoing drought, now in its third consecutive year, the department emphasised the critical need for coordinated efforts among all relevant bodies to manage water resources effectively. They expressed a commitment to ensuring a sustainable and high-quality water supply for the community.
