The third annual memorial for the late Archbishop Chrysostomos II took place on Friday at the Saint Barnabas Cathedral, a church that he envisioned and built during his lifetime. This significant event was presided over by Archbishop Georgios III, who was joined by Archbishop Seraphim of Zimbabwe and other notable figures from the Church, including metropolitans Kyrillos of Krini and Timotheos of Bostra, and several bishops.

Chrysostomos ii: Honouring a Legacy
The memorial service attracted a large gathering of clergy and community members, all coming together to pay their respects and honour the memory of Archbishop Chrysostomos II. The presence of the abbot of the Saint Barnabas monastery, archimandrite Ioannis, and the secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, archimandrite Georgios, underscored the importance of the occasion.
Key Achievements Remembered
Following the service, Archbishop Georgios took the time to reflect on the significant contributions made by his predecessor. He identified three pivotal achievements that have had a lasting impact on the Church of Cyprus:
- Restoration of the Holy Synod: This initiative allowed the Church to govern itself independently for the first time in centuries, marking a significant shift in its operational framework.
- Establishment of a Theological School: The creation of this educational institution has fostered a centre for theological education and discussion, enhancing the Church’s intellectual and spiritual foundation.
- Construction of Saint Barnabas Cathedral: This impressive structure met a critical need within the archdiocese and serves as a testament to the late archbishop’s vision and dedication.
A Prayer for Eternal Rest
After reflecting on these achievements, Archbishop Georgios performed a trisagion, which is a brief memorial service, at the grave of Chrysostomos II, praying for his eternal rest. In his remarks, he described the late archbishop as “a man of deep faith and strong action; a man who served the Church with self-sacrifice, courageously defended his flock, and loved Cyprus with all the strength of his soul.”
A Living Memory
Archbishop Georgios further emphasised the ongoing relevance of Chrysostomos II, stating, “The memory of the late Chrysostomos II is not a memory of the past; it is a living presence, it is a voice calling us to continue the work of faith, unity, truth and love for our homeland.” This statement resonated deeply with those in attendance, reinforcing the idea that the legacy of Chrysostomos II continues to inspire and guide the Church and its followers.
Community Participation
The memorial service not only served as a solemn occasion to remember the late archbishop but also as an opportunity for the community to come together in shared faith and remembrance. Many community members expressed their gratitude for the guidance and leadership provided by Chrysostomos II during his tenure.
Reflecting on the Future
As the Church of Cyprus moves forward, the lessons and values imparted by Archbishop Chrysostomos II remain ever poignant. The new leadership under Archbishop Georgios III is tasked with carrying forward these ideals, ensuring that the Church continues to thrive and adapt in a changing world.
The annual memorial service not only commemorates the life of a revered leader but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey of faith within the community, fostering a spirit of unity and purpose.
