Karahan recalled Ali’s firm stance against all forms of apartheid, drawing a poignant parallel with the United Nations resolution against apartheid in South Africa. He used this connection to advocate for a collective defence of the Republic of Cyprus, urging citizens to remain vigilant against political divisions and illegal developments that threaten social unity.
Criticism of Current Politics
In his remarks, Karahan did not shy away from criticising political parties in the north for their handling of the Cyprus issue. He mentioned the case of developer Simon Aykut, who illegally constructed 10,000 homes for approximately 40,000 settlers and subsequently received a five-year prison sentence. This incident, according to Karahan, highlights the need for a renewed commitment to the values Ali championed.

Ihsan Ali, who had served as an adviser to Presidents Makarios III and Spyros Kyprianou, was known for his opposition to nationalism and fanaticism.
