Cyprus has strengthened its ties with Croatia as President Nikos Christodoulides visited Zagreb, marking the first official visit by a Cypriot president in two decades. This visit underscored the alignment between the two Mediterranean nations on various European Union matters.
Significant Diplomatic Engagement
During his visit, President Christodoulides engaged in discussions with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, highlighting the close collaboration between their countries within the EU and the European People’s Party. Both leaders expressed their commitment to shared principles of stability, security, and sustainable development.
Preparations for EU Presidency
The timing of the visit coincides with Cyprus preparing for its presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. Christodoulides articulated his vision for Cyprus to act as an impartial mediator in promoting European integration and unity, with a focus on strategic autonomy. Key priorities outlined by the President include the multiannual financial framework, competitiveness, migration, reducing bureaucracy, and EU enlargement, particularly concerning the Western Balkans.
Collaboration on Global Issues
In their discussions, Christodoulides and Plenkovic also exchanged views on pressing global issues, including the Middle East and the situation in Ukraine. Both countries have felt the repercussions of war and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We welcome any initiative that will end the foreign invasion and occupation of Ukraine. We support any US initiative, as we did for President Trump’s 20-point plan for the Middle East, for which Cyprus is actively working,” Christodoulides stated.
He stressed that for any successful negotiations between the leaders of the US and Russia regarding Ukraine, it is vital that the President of Ukraine is present, as no agreement can be reached without the involvement of the directly affected nation.
Support for Cyprus’ Sovereignty
Focusing on the ongoing Cyprus issue, Christodoulides took the opportunity to inform Plenkovic about recent developments. He expressed gratitude for Croatia’s steadfast support based on international law and principles upheld by the EU.
A Friendly Bilateral Relationship
Prime Minister Plenkovic described the relationship between Cyprus and Croatia as friendly and cooperative. He emphasised the shared objective of enhancing collaboration in trade and cultural exchanges, which he believes will benefit both nations.
The Role of Cyprus in the Region
Plenkovic recognised Cyprus’ significant role in the Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East, underscoring the importance of the upcoming EU presidency. The Croatian Prime Minister expressed optimism for the successful leadership of Cyprus during this period.
Looking Ahead
The strengthening of ties between Cyprus and Croatia exemplifies the importance of collaboration among EU member states. As both nations prepare for future challenges, their commitment to shared values and mutual support will be vital in navigating the complexities of regional and global politics.
