Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos has engaged with US Congress leadership in Washington to discuss the extension of the arms embargo on Cyprus. This pivotal meeting centred on Cyprus’s strategic role in the Eastern Mediterranean and its partnership with the United States.

The Foreign Ministry characterised the meetings at the Capitol as unprecedented, highlighting the importance of Cyprus’s geostrategic position and its potential contributions on both international and regional stages. Kombos’s visit involved two primary activities: direct discussions with Congress leaders and participation in think tank events focusing on regional developments.
Key Meetings with Congressional Leaders
Kombos met with influential senators and congressmen from various committees, including Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Energy. Notable figures included House Foreign Relations Committee Chair Brian Mast, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Jim Risch, and Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Roger Wicker. These discussions were aimed at enhancing the strategic partnership between Cyprus and the United States, as well as addressing regional and international developments.
Strengthening Cyprus-US Relations
In a video statement following his meetings, Kombos expressed the significance of his second visit to Congress leadership in bolstering the relationship with the US. He emphasised the critical nature of Cyprus as a reliable partner, particularly in light of its presidency of the EU Council. “We are in a very difficult geostrategic and geopolitical situation, and the Republic of Cyprus will continue its efforts to help resolve various issues affecting both of us,” Kombos stated.
Cyprus’s Role in Regional Stability
During his presentations at think tank events, Kombos outlined the priorities and challenges facing Cyprus as the EU Council Presidency. He called for enhanced dialogue and cooperation between the EU and the US, particularly in light of current regional and international developments. Collaboration on the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor
One of the key topics was the importance of developing the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC). Kombos highlighted the corridor’s potential to enhance connectivity and cooperation across the region. He also held discussions with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, congratulating him on significant trade agreements between the US and India. “Incredible results and effective diplomacy,” he remarked.
Focused Discussions on Bilateral Cooperation
In his meeting with Senator Jerry Moran, chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, Kombos delved into the Cyprus-US partnership and the need for transatlantic priorities. The discussions also emphasised bipartisan engagement for Cyprus in the US Congress.
With Senator Wicker, the focus was on strategies to deepen the Cyprus-US partnership. Kombos acknowledged the strong bipartisan support from Congress for Cyprus, particularly regarding initiatives that promote security and regional stability. “It is crucial that we continue to strengthen our ties for mutual benefit,” he stated.
Addressing Middle East Developments
Meetings with Senators Risch and Shaheen also involved discussions on bilateral cooperation and the evolving situation in the Middle East. They exchanged views on the transatlantic relationship, especially during Cyprus’s tenure as the EU Council Presidency. With Brian Mast, discussions revolved around the Cyprus-US strategic partnership and efforts to foster regional peace.
