The project is set to take place at the Pervola parking lot and aims to enhance the local market scene, with construction expected to be completed within the next three months.
According to Phedonos, this initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to support the development of the city centre while promoting local producers in a modernised and aesthetically pleasing environment.
Municipal engineer Christos Constantinides provided insight into the financial aspects of the project, stating that it will cost approximately €145,000 plus VAT. He emphasised the functional value of the project, noting, “The project has great functional value, since it attempts to leave its mark through the revival of the vegetable market as was done in the not-so-distant past.”
The new shelter will enable the market to operate efficiently while also providing flexibility for the space to serve as a parking lot on non-market days. This dual-purpose approach is part of a wider effort to uplift the area, which will also see the revival of the traditional Faikis bakery, the establishment of two museums, and the introduction of student halls.
In this revamped space, local producers will have the opportunity to sell their products directly to consumers, effectively bypassing traditional merchants. This direct-to-consumer model is expected to foster a more vibrant local economy.
Scheduled to occupy 200m² in the western section of the Pervola municipal parking lot, the market will be operational every Saturday and/or Sunday from 6am to 1pm, providing an accessible platform for local agricultural goods.
