He fell in love with its serene landscape and, after acquiring a significant portion of the village, he envisions creating a holistic wellness retreat. “For 20 years, I had a dream to create a place where people can truly rest their minds,” he explains, distancing his plans from the stereotypical luxury resorts that dominate the tourism landscape.
Controversy Brews
However, Kertesz’s vision has sparked controversy. Allegations circulating on social media suggest that the development poses risks to the environment and that the village is becoming an exclusive enclave. Community leaders, like Giannis Giannakis of Arsos, firmly refute these claims, stating that public access to Trozena remains intact. “This is land of the Republic of Cyprus,” he asserts, emphasising that no one can restrict access to public roads.
The project has attracted the attention of environmental authorities, who are investigating potential violations related to land use. Inspections have been initiated by the Department of Environment, focusing on earthworks and developments conducted without proper authorisation. Kertesz maintains that no Turkish Cypriot land was involved in his acquisitions and insists he aims to restore Trozena to its former glory.
