- As the city continues to embrace sustainable practices, the success of this cleanup serves as a beacon of hope for future community-led initiatives.
In collaboration with municipal services, volunteers focused on collecting recyclable waste, specifically targeting PMD (plastics, metals, and drink cartons) and sprays. This concerted effort ensured that the streets were cleared and prepared for reopening in record time.
Compared to last year’s effort, which saw only 50 volunteers participating, this year’s turnout represents a remarkable tenfold increase. This growth signifies a rising commitment to environmental stewardship within the community.
During the three-hour cleanup, municipal services removed a staggering 50 tonnes of waste, while volunteers collected an impressive 8.5 tonnes of recyclables, including 7 tonnes of sprays. The sorted materials were subsequently transported to state-licensed organisations for recycling, ensuring they are processed abroad rather than ending up in local landfills.
“This year’s cleanup demonstrates the real impact volunteers can make,” remarked Anna Gubareva, founder of City Friends Club. “It has become the largest cleanup in our four-year history, showing that community spirit in our city continues to grow. We are especially proud that during the carnival, people chose not only to celebrate and have fun, but also to give back to the city – helping redirect waste from landfill to recycling and supporting a more sustainable urban environment.”
The City Friends Club expressed gratitude to the Limassol municipality for their cooperation and support, as well as to all volunteers who dedicated their time and energy. Their combined efforts showcased the power of collective action.
